Predicting Whitetail Activity

    Weather can have a profound impact on a hunter on any given day. Just how much can weather effect deer behavior? Does it really make a difference? The following charts detail what type of weather increases and decreases deer activity in the field.

    GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS
    (increased deer activity)
  • Barometric pressure of between 29.80 and 30.29
  • Puffy, gray altocumulus clouds in the north or northwestern sky, with winds of less than 10 mph coming from the south or southwest
  • High, scattered, cotton-like cumulus clouds overhead
  • Relative humidity of less than 60 percent
  • Red sunset
  • New moon

    BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS
    (decreased deer activity)
  • Barometric pressure of 29.75 or lower
  • Solid, gun-metal gray altostratus clouds accompanied by high southerly winds
  • Low, dark gray, rainy nimbostratus clouds accompanied by high southerly winds.
  • Lower cirrus clouds (mare's tails)
  • Tall, anvil-topped cumutonimbus clouds
  • Corona (halo effect) around the moon
  • Relative humidity of more than 60 percent
  • Yellow sunset
  • Full moon
